Bachelor of Community Development and Social Justice, (CSD/CSE)

Programme Overview

Preamble: The Bachelor of Community Development and Social Justice was initiated in the department in 2015 and approved by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). The programme is offered on both days abbreviated as CSD and evening as CSE. It runs for three (3) years full-time and it’s provided in a flexible mode of study using both face-to-face and virtual learning. CSD and CSE programmes are under the mandate of the Office of the Academic Registrar of Kyambogo University implemented and coordinated by the Department of Community and Disability Studies, Kyambogo University.

Rationale

The Bachelor of Community Development and Social Justice programme adopts a human rights approach to service delivery and community development. This enables graduates to work in varied community settings and to confidently respond to diverse socio-economic challenges vulnerable people and communities face.  The programme draws knowledge and perspectives from other disciplines to facilitate comprehension, interpretation and provision of holistic responses to the complex and cross-cutting socio-economic and cultural challenges that communities contend with. Besides, the programme enables graduates to promote and nurture principles and practices of social justice during their work with communities. Students are placed twice in the second and third year of studies in community practices in reputable civil society organizations and government departments to have hands-on training in inclusive community development and social justice. 

Aim: The Bachelor of Community Development and Social Justice aims to enable learners to understand the theory and practice of social justice and inclusive community development so as to facilitate its integration in community development interventions.

Target Group

The Bachelor of Community Development and Social Justice programme targets holders of Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent (both arts and science combination), and practitioners in community development and related services and activists in social justice and social inclusion.

Mode of Delivery

Learning on the Bachelor of Community Development and Social Justice is facilitated in an adult-centered way with interactive, reflective through self-study, and group-based learning, via a blended system of delivery.

To be admitted to the Bachelor of Community Development and Social Justice programme, a candidate must satisfy any of two the two (2) general admission requirements for Kyambogo University below.

• Hold Two (2) Principal passes at A’level obtained at the same sitting in Arts or Science subjects.
• At least a second class in Diploma in Arts or Science courses from a recognized academic institution.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Community Development and Social Justice have a wide range of job opportunities in both government and nongovernmental originations in Uganda and Internationally. They are employed as community development facilitators, program officers and managers, community development officers, development advisors, and social entrepreneurs, advocates and promoters of the rights of vulnerable persons.

2. For International Students: 1,890, 000 UGX per annum; (945,000=) per semester
