Duration: 12 weeks

Programme Overview

Preamble: The Certificate in Personal Assistant Services (CPAS) is twelve (12) weeks course designed and started in 2021 by the Department of Community and Disability Studies together with Light for the World in Uganda.  The course is provided on an evening and weekend schedule comprising of seven (7) weekends of lectures, one (1) week of examinations, and four (4) weeks of practical field placement.

Rationale

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), Article 19 – ‘’Living Independently and Being Included in the Community’’, emphasizes the importance of providing necessary support services, including personal assistance, to prevent isolation or segregation from the community.  The implementation of several laws on disability has increased opportunities and participation of persons with disabilities in social, economic and political spheres of life in Uganda and globally. However, there are persons with disabilities who cannot ably perform some activities of daily living and self-help activities given the nature of their impairment and barriers that exist in the communities. Although persons with disabilities need personal assistance support services in the above regard, most of them use people who are either next of kin and/or hired but the assistants lack the professional training in handling and working with and for persons with disabilities. Thus, helpers and/or support assistants to persons with disabilities need to be equipped with the knowledge, skills and right attitude and values needed in disability support services provision.

 Aim

The Certificate in Personal Assistant Services (CPAS) course is intended to equip people working as personal assistants of persons with disabilities with the knowledge, skills and right attitude and values necessary for supporting or working with and for persons with disabilities.
