David Kam Khaemba
Biography:
David Kam Khaemba is an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Visual Impairment Studies, Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation, Kyambogo University. He holds additional responsibilities such as Examination Coordinator in the department and a Team Leader of Kyambogo University Learning Centre at Kiyoora Primary Teachers College, Ntungamo District.
Mr. Khaemba’s specific areas of expertise include Orientation and Mobility, Braille Education, Low Vision Rehabilitation, Adapted Sports for Persons with Disabilities, and Communication and Deafblindness Education. He is among the twelve (12) pioneer graduates of Orientation and Mobility at Kyambogo University, and one of the first to take a course in Communication and Deafblindness at Groningen University, Netherlands.
Mr. David is a teacher by profession and has taught for more than thirty (30) years at different levels. He has been teaching at the University since 2002 up to date and has extensive experience as an all-around mentor for students, including those with disabilities. He is pursuing a Doctorate Degree in Special Needs Education at Kenyatta University, Kenya, and his research is focused on the perceptions of students with visual impairment on access to higher education services in public universities in Uganda.
Mr. David holds a Master of Philosophy in Special Needs Education from the University of Oslo, Norway, a Bachelor of Education, Special Needs Education (Honours) from Kyambogo University, a Diploma in Special Education from the Institute of Teacher Education Kyambogo (ITEK), a Teacher Certificate, a Certificate in Orientation and Mobility, and a Certificate in Communication and Deafblindness from the University of Groningen, Netherlands.
His research areas of interest include Low Vision Rehabilitation, Adapted Sports and Disability, and Access to Higher Education Services by Students with Visual Impairment. He has supervised several undergraduate students in research, fieldwork, and community practice on the given research areas.
Mr. Khaemba is passionate about the needs and well-being of children and adults with special needs and disabilities and believes that good service delivery comes from adapting to expand opportunities for all. He believes that reasonable accommodation can enable the active participation of people with disabilities. He is the Initiator and Pioneer Patron for Kyambogo University Visually Impaired Students Association, Uganda.
