We are delighted to introduce to you an inclusive and professional academic department dedicated to the inclusion of persons with visual impairment through rehabilitation, research and academic transformation. We are a Center of excellence with professionals of innovative and intellectual experience on visual impairment and mobility rehabilitation. The central role of the department is to maximize the functioning of persons with visual impairment to become independent and regain self-confidence for active participation and inclusion in society. We’re a hub for optimization of residual vision, utilizing low vision devises, and making adaptations to the environment to compensate for low vision. We offer a range of programs designed to enhance education and rehabilitation geared towards persons with visual impairment. Our committed department staff are multi-skilled working as educators, counsellors and rehabilitation specialists guiding communities towards optimizing the potential and empowerment of persons with visual impairment. Transforming Lives: Expertise in Visual Impairment Studies

Our department is dedicated to providing specialized training and professional services in visual impairment, enhancing the capabilities of educators and professionals to support individuals with visual impairments. We aim to create inclusive environments in both educational institutions and the broader community.

 

Contribution to Global, regional and National Policy and Frameworks

At the global stage, the department’s programmes and activities contribute to the achievement of but not limited to these key
international policies and frameworks.

To be a Centre of Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Research in Visual Impairment Studies and Mobility Rehabilitation in Africa.

To develop and provide professional training services and scientific knowledge for people with visual impairment to maximize their functioning, become independent and regain self-confidence for active participation and inclusion in society.

UNICEF Lego Project: Two (2) of our staff i.e. Dr. Dr. Odette Tumwesigye Niyisabwa, Ph.D., Lecturer, and Dr. Odeke-Nato Joseph, Ph.D., Lecturer, are Technical Consultants (Braille),  for the UNICEF -LEGO Braille Bricks Pilot Project in Uganda implemented by Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES), Uganda. https://www.unicef.org/uganda/stories/braille-bricks-transform-learning-children-visual-impairment

Technical Services

The department of Visual Impairment Studies has specialized staff who offer various cost-effective technical support services and training to persons with visual impairment and caregivers to enable independent living, inclusion and participation of persons with visual impairment.

 

Academic Programmes

Currently, the department provides technical support to Special Needs Educational study programmes in the faculty namely;

  • PhD in Special Needs Education (GDSN),
  • Masters Degree in Special Needs Education (GMSN),
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Special Needs Education (GPSN), and
  • Bachelor of Education-Special Needs Education (BSNE) at Kyambogo University.

The department also provides supports services in teaching and research on visual impairment studies for students who study at Kyambogo University Distance Learning Programme in six (6) learning centers located across the countryside. The department is developing several graduate and undergraduate programs, including a Postgraduate Diploma in Visual impairment Studies and a Postgraduate Diploma in Mobility and Sports Empowerment for Persons with Visual impairment.
