Programme Overview

Preamble: The Diploma of Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) is one of the inaugural and oldest programmes in the department that was initiated in 1996 at the time when the department was still a Social and Vocational Rehabilitation (SVR) section under the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE).  Over the last thirty (30) years, the programme has been timely reviewed and approved by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). The programme is offered on a day schedule and studied for two (2) years. It is both private and government-sponsored with only four (4) government sponsorship slots available for applicants who meet the admission criteria. The programme is under the mandate of the Office of the Academic Registrar of Kyambogo University implemented and coordinated by the Department of Community and Disability Studies.

 Rationale

The Diploma of Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) programme is anchored on the concept of community-based rehabilitation- a strategy introduced by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1978 in aimed at inclusion, equalization of opportunities, and increasing access to rehabilitation services by persons with disabilities. Since its introduction in Uganda in 1992, CBR as a development strategy has grown into a multifaceted approach extending services to various categories of vulnerable individuals. The Diploma of Community Based Rehabilitation programme, therefore comprises a blend of rehabilitation and community development courses aimed at empowering graduates to work with persons with disabilities and other vulnerable individuals and groups in communities.

 Aim

The Diploma of Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) aims at equipping beginner and/or early career practitioners who are working with persons with disabilities with practical knowledge and skills to develop the competencies needed for service and further studies in the disability rehabilitation field.

 Target Group

Early careers and/or beginners/practitioners interested in improving the quality of their services and/or beginning a career in disability rehabilitation. We also target holders of Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent (both arts and science combination), interested in pursuing a career in community-based rehabilitation service.

Mode of Delivery

Learning on the Diploma of Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) programme is facilitated in an adult-centered way with a hands-on approach involving several practical sessions, field-based tasks, and interactive, reflective sessions through self-study, and group-based learning, via a blended system of delivery.

To be admitted to the Diploma of Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) programme, a candidate must satisfy the general admission requirements for Kyambogo University below.

• One (1) Principal Pass in any subject and Two (2) Subsidiary passes at A’ level obtained at the same sitting.

Graduates of the Diploma of Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) programme have advanced their careers in the field by pursuing bachelor’s, postgraduate and graduate studies. Given the hands-on nature of teaching and learning on the programme, most graduates have gained employment in both government and nongovernmental originations in Uganda.  They begin their work careers as rehabilitation services providers, assist in community-based rehabilitation programmes, and development organizations, and most of them have formed organizations that design assistive devises and technologies and/or provide freelance disability rehabilitation services.

• For Ugandan and East African Students: 700,000 UGX per annum; (350,000=) per semester
• For International Students: 1, 050,000 UGX per annum; (525,000=) per semester
