Diploma in Mobility and Rehabilitation (MBR)

 Programme Overview

Preamble: The Diploma in Mobility and Rehabilitation (MBR) programme is one of the inaugural and oldest programmes in the department that was initiated in 1996 at the time when the department was still a Social and Vocational Rehabilitation (SVR) section under the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE).  Over the last thirty (30) years, the programme has been timely reviewed and approved by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). The programme is privately sponsored and offered on a day schedule and studied for two (2) years. The programme is under the mandate of the Office of the Academic Registrar of Kyambogo University implemented and coordinated by the Department of Community and Disability Studies.

 Rationale

Globally, an estimated 2.4 billion people are currently living with a health condition that may benefit from rehabilitation. Mobility rehabilitation is one form of therapy needed and designed for patients with mobility issues after surgery, injury, or illness. It helps a child, adult or older person to be as independent in everyday activities and enables participation in education, work, recreation and meaningful life roles. However, there are inadequacies of trained personnel needed to and/or currently providing mobility rehabilitation services in Uganda. The Diploma in Mobility and Rehabilitation (MBR) is designed to prepare learners to begin an early career in mobility rehabilitation services provision by blending rehabilitation with the ethos of community-based approaches to interventions.

Aim

The Diploma in Mobility and Rehabilitation aims at equipping beginner and/or early career practitioners who are providing rehabilitation services to both persons with disabilities and other vulnerable persons with practical knowledge and skills to develop the competencies needed for service and further studies in the field of disability rehabilitation.

 Target Group

Early careers and or beginners/practitioners interested in improving the quality of their services and/or beginning a career in disability rehabilitation. We also target holders of Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent (both arts and science combination), interested in pursuing a career in community-based rehabilitation service.

Mode of Delivery

Learning on the Diploma in Mobility and Rehabilitation is facilitated in an adult-centered way with a hands-on approach involving several practical sessions, field-based tasks, interactive, reflective sessions through self-study, group-based learning, via a blended system of delivery.

To be admitted to the Diploma in Mobility and Rehabilitation programme, a candidate must satisfy the general admission requirements for Kyambogo University below.

• One (1) Principal Pass in any subject and Two (2) Subsidiary passes at A’ level obtained at the same sitting.

Graduates of Diploma in Mobility and Rehabilitation have advanced their career in the field by pursuing bachelors, postgraduate and graduate studies. Given the hands-on nature of teaching and learning on the programme, most graduates have gained employment in both government and nongovernmental originations in Uganda.  They begin their work careers as rehabilitation services providers, and assistive devices designers, and assist in rehabilitation services provision some have formed organizations that design assistive devises and technologies and/or provide freelance disability rehabilitation services.

• For Ugandan and East African Students: 700,000 UGX per annum; (350,000=) per semester
• For International Students: 1,050,000 UGX per annum; (525,000=) per semester
