Programme Overview

Preamble

The Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting (SLI) programme started in 2002 and has been consistently reviewed after every five (5) years as required and approved by National Council of Higher Education (NCHE) Uganda. The Diploma of Sign Language Interpreting runs for two (2) years on full time.  The Diploma programme was developed as a stepping stone to the Bachelor of Arts in Uganda Sign Language Interpreting and Translation. The Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting has four (4) government sponsorship slots are available for funding your studies for two (2) years.

Rationale

There are several beginners and early career practitioners in the Ugandan Sign Language (USL) translation and interpreting service industry in Uganda. Some of them hold a Certificate of Ugandan Sign Language Interpreting but struggle to upgrade their competencies through further studies in higher-level education because there are such diploma-level programmes in the country. As such the Diploma of Ugandan Sign Language Interpreting comes in handy to offer professional training for early career practitioners and those intending to pursue a sign language interpreting and translation career. 

Aim

The Diploma of Sign Language Interpreting aims at equipping beginner and/or early career practitioners in Uganda Sign Language Interpreting and Translation with practical knowledge and skills to develop their competencies needed for service and further studies in the discipline.

Target Group

Early careers and beginners/practitioners providing Ugandan Sign Language Translation and Interpretation services.

Mode of Delivery

Learning on the Diploma of Sign Language Interpretation (SLI) is facilitated with a hands-on approach involving several practical sessions, and field-based tasks. Lectures are conducted through a blended system of delivery that involves flexible online and physical face-to-face modes of teaching with support services that meet the busy schedules, Deaf, and Hard of hearing target participants.

Admission to Diploma of Sign Language Interpreting (SLI) is in accordance with Kyambogo University Undergraduate Admission procedures and regulations.  A candidate shall be eligible for admission on meeting the following minimum requirements.

  • One (1) Principal Pass in any subject and Two (2) Subsidiary passes at ‘A’ (UACE) level obtained at the same sitting.

Graduates of Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting (SLI) from Kyambogo University, have advanced their career in the field by pursuing bachelors, postgraduate and graduate studies. Given the hands-on nature of teaching and learning on the programme, most graduates have gained employment and contract work services in sign language interpreting and translation in various institutions in Uganda.

  • For Ugandans and East African Students: 1,400,000 UGX Per annum (700,000=) per semester
  • For International Students: 2,100,000 UGX Per annum, (1,050, 000=) per semester
