Hakim Kibedi Wanume
Assistant Technician (Orientation and Mobility)
Hakim Kibedi Wanume is an Assistant Technician specializing in Orientation and Mobility in the Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation at Kyambogo University, Uganda. His key role is to train and provide orientation and mobility support services to students with disabilities. Additionally, Mr. Hakim manages the disability resource room, offering support services such as disability assessment, admission, mentorship, and guidance on course assignments and examinations for staff and students with special needs within the faculty.
Mr. Hakim has worked in the disability inclusion and rehabilitation field for over nineteen (19) years since joining the faculty in 2003. His expertise focuses on designing assistive devices, orientation and mobility materials, providing support services, vocational rehabilitation, and promoting inclusive entrepreneurship to empower young persons with disabilities. Demonstrating his passion for youth empowerment, Hakim initiated the Disability Inclusive Entrepreneurship Training (DIET) program in 2019. Funded by the Aga Khan Foundation Uganda under the AKDN-COVID-19 Response EU Project, the program has provided business skills training to students with and without disabilities, enabling many to start small businesses and prepare for self-employment.
Hakim holds a Master’s in Vocational Pedagogy and a Postgraduate Diploma in Special Needs Education from Kyambogo University, as well as a Bachelor of Commerce (Entrepreneurship) and a Diploma in Business Management and Administration from Makerere University, Uganda. He worked with the Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) for twelve (12) years as a Special Needs Examination Monitor from 2007 to 2018 and served as a project administrator for a Save the Children Street Children project between 2001 and 2002.
Hakim is currently the Regional Coordinator of the Civil Society Coalition on Rehabilitation of Violence Extremism (CISCAVE) in the Eastern region of Uganda.
