Programme Overview
Preamble: The programme was instituted in 2015 and when it was first approved and accredited by National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), and Kyambogo University, Uganda. The programme has since then been revised and it runs for two (2) years on full time with flexible study modes using both face to face and virtual learning. The programme is under the mandate of the Directorate of Graduate Training and Research of Kyambogo University and implemented in conjunction with the coordination of the Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation.
Rationale
The Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation, Faculty of Education at Kyambogo University has been training teachers and other practitioners in the area of special needs education and/or education, community education and community-based rehabilitation particularly on undergraduate programmes. Moreso, the government of Uganda is advocating for increased recruitment of teachers and tutors of teachers of special needs and inclusive education to fill the understaffed gap in a bid to accelerate achievement of the Fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4) on the Global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. As such the graduates from the above programmes and current teachers need to further develop their knowledge and skills in special needs and inclusive education. But there was no programme to bridge the above gap thus, the need and establishment of the Master in Special Needs Education (GMSN) at Kyambogo University, Uganda.
Aim
The programme aims at equipping students with advanced, analytical knowledge and skills in special needs and inclusive education research, teaching and services delivery, so as to contribute to increased research on policies and interventions for promotion of special needs and inclusive education in Uganda and beyond.
Target Group
The Master in Special Needs Education (GMSN) targets teachers, leaders, managers who are already working and/or intending to work in special needs and inclusive education sector programs and organizations. It also targets people who hold bachelor’s degree in various professions such as education, humanities, social work, social sciences, and community development or their equivalents.
Mode of Delivery
Learning on the Master in Special Needs Education (GMSN) is facilitated through a blended systems of delivery that involves flexible online and physical face to face modes of teaching, and it meets the busy schedules, disabilities of target participants.
Admission to Master in Special Needs Education (GMSN) shall be in accordance with Kyambogo University Graduate School Procedures and Regulations. A candidate shall be eligible for admission to the GMSN on meeting the following minimum requirements.
- Holder of an honours Second Class Bachelor’s degree in the field of Special Needs Education, Community Based Rehabilitation, Adult and Community Education, Social Work and Community Development, Education.
OR
- Holder of an honours any other Bachelor’s degree, but with a Postgraduate Diploma in Special Needs Education.

Most of the students enrolled on Master of Special Needs Education, (GMSN) at Kyambogo University, are already working in several educational programs in the field of special needs and inclusive education. They’re practicing headteachers, teachers, tutors of teachers’ trainers in primary, secondary and tertiary education sector. Some are leaders and managers of special needs and inclusive education in nongovernmental organizations and government ministries, departments and agencies. For, those who joined the programme with no prior working status, they’ve earned jobs as special needs and inclusive education specialists, research assistants, and social entrepreneurs in the field.
- For Ugandans and East African Students: 3,000,000 UGX Per annum (1,500,000=) per semester.
- For International Students: 4,500,000 UGX Per annum, (2,250,000=) per semester.
