Programme Overview
Preamble: The Postgraduate Diploma in Community-Based Rehabilitation (GPCR) has a long history of thirty (30) years when it was first established in January 1996 in the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE). The department is the only one offering GPCR in Uganda, East Africa and the African region and has in the last three decades been promptly revised, approved and accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), and Kyambogo University, Uganda. The programme runs for one (1) year on full-time but with flexible study modes using both face-to-face and virtual learning. The programme is under the mandate of the Directorate of Graduate Training and Research of Kyambogo University, coordinated and implemented by the Department of Community and Disability Studies.
Rationale
Persons with disabilities in Uganda still face significant barriers to participating and seeking inclusion in societal activities. Despite the presence of disability rehabilitation services from both state and non-state actors, these services are not adequately addressing the needs of persons with disabilities and the challenges they face due to limited professional competencies and training opportunities for service providers. Disability rehabilitation interventions often lack wide-ranging services and do not effectively utilize local resources. A comprehensive approach is needed to enable active participation of persons with disabilities, including their families and society. This requires training in the community-based rehabilitation (CBR) approach, which combines the efforts of people with disabilities, their families, organizations, communities, and relevant stakeholders.
