Programme Overview

Preamble

The Postgraduate Diploma in Special Needs Education (GPSN) was instituted in 2015 when it was first approved and accredited by National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), and Kyambogo University, Uganda. The programme runs for one (1) year on full time but with flexible study modes using both face to face and virtual learning. The programme is under the mandate of the Directorate of Graduate Training and Research of Kyambogo University and implemented in conjunction with the coordination of the Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation.

Rationale

There are a number of teachers and/or graduates of other degree programmes in humanities, social work, social sciences, community education and rehabilitation, who desire to shape their career and /or gain competencies in special needs and inclusive education. However, they lack academic programmes that would appreciate their diverse academic backgrounds and/or give them an entry into further advanced studies in the field. The Postgraduate Diploma in Special Needs Education (GMSN) at Kyambogo University, offers such a gateway to multi-disciplinary academic backgrounds to redefine their career and/or gain professional competencies in special needs and inclusive education.

 

Aim

The programme aims at equipping students with analytical knowledge and skills to become proficient in provision of special needs and inclusive education services.

 

Target Group

The Postgraduate Diploma in Special Needs Education (GPSN) targets teachers, leaders, managers who are already working and/or other professionals intending to work in special needs and inclusive education sector programs and organizations. It also targets people who hold bachelor’s degree in various professions such as education, humanities, social work, social sciences, and community development or their equivalents.

Admission to Postgraduate Diploma in Special Needs Education (GPSN) shall be in accordance with Kyambogo University Graduate School procedures and regulations.  A candidate shall be eligible for admission to the GPSN on meeting the following minimum requirements.

  • Holder of at-least Second-Class Honors degree in related fields suitable for Service in Special Needs Education and Rehabilitation.

Graduates of Postgraduate Diploma in Special Needs Education, (GPSN) are usually people working in diverse fields of professions. Those who join without prior work graduate and gain employment in various fields as special needs and inclusive education trainers, teachers, researchers, program managers and social entrepreneurs in the field.

  • For Ugandans and East African Students: 1,400,000 UGX Per annum (700,000=) per semester
  • For International Students: 2,100,000 UGX Per annum, (1,050, 000=) per semester
